You don’t need an Echo speaker to start using Alexa. With just the Amazon Alexa mobile app, you can explore Alexa’s features, control compatible smart devices, and even talk to Alexa directly from your phone.
If you’re curious about Alexa but not ready to buy hardware yet, this is the perfect place to begin.
Step 1: Install the Alexa App
Download the Amazon Alexa app from the App Store (iOS) or Google Play (Android) and sign in with your Amazon account.
The app works as both your control center and your first Alexa device.
Step 2: Use Alexa Directly in the App
Once signed in, you can talk to Alexa without owning an Echo.
Tap the Alexa icon in the app and try:
- “What’s the weather?”
- “Set a timer for 10 minutes”
- “Remind me to take out the trash”
Alexa responds through your phone’s speaker, just like a smart speaker would.
Step 3: Explore Alexa Features Without Hardware
From the More tab, you can browse and use Alexa features right away:
- Enable Skills
- Set reminders and alarms
- Create lists
- Check calendar events
- Review voice history
This is a great way to learn what Alexa can do before committing to any devices.
Step 4: Add Smart Home Devices (Optional)
Even without an Echo, you can add many Alexa-compatible smart devices.
- Go to Devices
- Tap +
- Choose Add Device
- Select the device type or brand
- Follow the setup steps
You’ll be able to control these devices from the app and via voice on your phone.
Note: Some devices require their own hub, but many Wi-Fi devices work directly with Alexa.
Step 5: Create Routines in the App
Routines aren’t just for Echo owners—you can build and run them entirely from the app.
- Open More
- Tap Routines
- Tap +
- Choose a trigger (button tap, time, or voice command)
- Add actions like turning on lights or sending announcements
You can manually run routines from the app anytime.
Step 6: Control Everything Quietly
Since Alexa lives in the app, you don’t always have to talk.
- Turn devices on and off
- Run routines silently
- Adjust settings
- View device status
Perfect for apartments, shared spaces, or late-night control.
Step 7: Add an Echo Later (If You Want)
If you decide to add an Echo in the future, it drops right into the same app.
All your devices, routines, and settings will already be there—no rework required.
Start Before You Buy
Using Alexa with just the mobile app lets you:
- Learn Alexa at your own pace
- Test smart devices before buying a speaker
- Decide if Alexa fits your lifestyle
No Echo. No pressure. Just a simple way to get started.
